What Is a Dental Veneer?
A dental veneer is a wafer-thin, custom-made, tooth-coloured shell that is either made of resin composite or high strength lab manufactured porcelain. Veneers are designed to cover the front surface of the teeth to improve appearance. The shells are bonded to the front of the teeth in order to change their colour, length, size or shape.
Why Choose Dental Veneers?
Many people choose to invest in dental veneers if they are not happy with the appearance of their smile. They might be perfect for people who have:
- Teeth which are discoloured from root canal treatment, stains, or the presence of large resin fillings.
- Teeth which are worn, chipped or broken.
- Teeth which are misaligned, uneven or irregularly shaped.
- Gaps between the teeth.
Procedure for Dental Veneers
Getting dental veneers usually requires about three trips to the dentist.
Consultation and Planning
This first step involves discussing your goals for the procedure. The dentist will examine your teeth to make sure the treatment is appropriate for you. You’ll have x-rays done and impressions are taken of your mouth and teeth.
One of our dentists will prepare your tooth/teeth for a veneer by preparing the surface of the enamel to make room for the veneer. The dentist will then make a model of the tooth to send to the lab and individually construct each veneer. This process usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks.
Once the veneer has been fitted and you are happy with its size, shape and colour, your tooth will be cleaned, polished and etched. The dentist will apply special cement to the veneer and place it on the tooth, using a special light to activate the cement chemicals, causing it to harden and cure quickly. After this, it’s just a matter of cleaning up the excess cement, evaluating the bite and making small adjustments as necessary.
